Director: Caitlyn Galvin

President Carter's Cabinet
Under the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah, Iran was the United States' chief ally in the Middle East and a key guarantor of American security interests. Yet, in early 1979, President Jimmy Carter was confronted with the reality that the Shah, a man the United States had gone to great lengths to support, had been driven out of power and replaced by an Islamic theocracy openly resentful of American "imperialism" and interference in Iran. Now, as the former Shah seeks entry into the United States for cancer treatment, President Carter must consider how to respond to the new Iranian regime.

As a member of President Carter's cabinet, your role is to advise President Carter on foreign and domestic issues facing the United States in 1979. Over the course of the next three years, you will determine how to fortify America's role in the Middle East and strengthen the American economy, all while the 1980 presidential election hangs overhead. Inevitably, you will clash with fellow cabinet members, but success during these tumultuous times depends on you.
Ayatollah Khomeini's Cabinet
After decades under the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah, in early 1979, a new, Islamic regime took control of Iran, and Ayatollah Khomeini was chosen to lead the new government. However, the new regime now faces a powerful opponent. The United States, the Shah's strongest supporter, has a long history of interference in Iranian politics, and there is fear among many that America will attempt to reinstate the Shah. Ayatollah Khomeini must consider how to respond to American actions while retaining his grip on power.

As a member of Ayatollah Khomeini's cabinet, your role is to advise Khomeini on foreign and domestic issues facing Iran in 1979. Over the course of the next three years, you will determine how to strengthen your younger regime and challenge American influence in Iran and the Middle East. Inevitably, you will clash with fellow cabinet members, but the success of the recently-designed Islamic Republic of Iran depends on you.
